On October 1, Peter Gumbsch was appointed chairman of the Fraunhofer Group MATERIALS.
Hector Fellow Peter Gumbsch, head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM) since 2001, was appointed new chairman of the Fraunhofer Group MATERIALS by the Fraunhofer Senate on October 1, 2019, following an unanimous election by the member institutions of the Group. The term of office is three years.
In a press release, Hector Fellow Peter Gumbsch highlights the increasing digitalization in the fields of materials science and materials engineering as an important focus of his forthcoming term in office. Furthermore, he emphasizes the necessity of a systematic orientation of research activities: "Many technical solutions that contribute to solving global issues such as energy, mobility or climate change are of a systemic nature and are 'Powered by Materials'. As materials and components institutes, we must make a confident effort to underline the systemic contribution of our work."
The Fraunhofer Group MATERIALS bundles the expertise of 16 material science-oriented institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Around 2,200 researchers work in the institutes of the network.
