12.04.2019 | Awards
The Thai Prince Mahidol Award Foundation honours the Heidelberg virologist Ralf Bartenschlager.
Ralf Bartenschlager is the 2019 winner of the Prince Mahidol Award in the field of medicine. The award ceremony will take place on 30 January 2020 in the Great Palace of Bangkok. The Hector Fellow will receive the award, endowed with 100,000 US dollars, from the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation for his research on the hepatitis C virus in Thailand.
The contribution and discoveries of Bartenschlagers are crucial for the development of antiviral drugs for hepatitis C. Since 2014 the first drug against hepatitis C has been used. According to Bartenschlager, there is still a great need to research hepatitis C: "Even if there are now very effective drugs, hepatitis C is a creeping disease, because many people are infected without knowing it. There is an urgent need to develop a vaccine to protect against the infection".
The Prince Mahidol Award, presented since 1992, honours Bartenschlager for his achievements. The award recognizes excellent achievements in the categories "Medicine" and "Public Health". The award goes back to Prince Mahidol of Songkla, who fundamentally modernized the Thai health care and education system.
Congratulations to Ralf Bartenschlager!
