    A short film on Prof. Gumbsch shows how important material structures are to avoid accidents. 

    Prof. Dr. Peter Gumbsch, head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials and Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and his teams are conducting research in laboratory conditions under the motto "more economical, efficient and safe". Prof. Gumbsch's research supports industrial concepts for autonomous vehicles, resource-saving construction and power plants and designs materials with completely new properties. His research groups at the KIT and the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM) in Freiburg ensure that self-propelled cars become safer, turbines lower-loss, pumps and fuel cells more durable and load-bearing components more resistant. The aim of the research team is to predict how materials tear and crease into their innermost structure and how fractures spread.
