Prof. Dr. Jürg Leuthold

Institute of Electromagnetic Fields, ETH Zurich

Hector Fellow since 2010

Jürg Leuthold is Head of the Institute of Electromagnetic Fields at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.

The physicist develops new concepts and methods of optical signal processing at the highest data transferring rates. His research aims, among other things, at further increasing the speed of digital data transmission to reduce energy consumption and to further miniaturize the optical components used. For example, in 2014 his research group managed to build one of the smallest and most powerful electro-optical switches until then.

Professor Leuthold’s work has been awarded an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC), the State Research Award of Baden-Württemberg and the Doron Prize. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities as well as member of the board of the Optical Society of America.
