Prof. Dr. Hilbert von Löhneysen

Institute for Solid State Physics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Hector Fellow since 2011

Hilbert von Löhneysen is Emeritus Professor at the Physikalisches Institut of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Until April 2016 he was also Director of the Institute for Solid State Physics at KIT.

His research focuses on experimental solid state physics, on the one hand in the field of strongly correlated electron systems, in particular the exploration of magnetic quantum phase transitions, and on the other hand on the exploration of metallic nanostructures, for example, of nanocontacts between superconductors and ferromagnets.

Hilbert von Löhneysen is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). From 1995 until 2001 he was member of the senate and the Joint Committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Between 2006 and 2012 he was a member of the German Council of Science and Humanities, additionally he was also Chairman of the Scientific Commission from 2010 to 2012.
