Prof. Dr. Axel Meyer

(Full) Professor for Zoology / Evolutionary Biology, University of Konstanz

Hector Fellow since 2011

Axel Meyer is Professor of Zoology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Konstanz.

He belongs to the pioneers in the field of evolutionary biology. For example, he found out that speciation may occur without geographic barriers and discovered that genome evolution is possible within few decades. Furthermore, he did pioneer work using genetic data to demonstrate relationships of individual species.

For his works Axel Meyer received, among others, an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC) and the Carus Medal of the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina). The magazine CICERO lists him among the most important intellectuals of Germany. He is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), the Academia Europaea and the European Molecular Biology Organization.
